Winter Back Pains

Have you been experiencing severe back pains this winter? Well, let us explain why this may be. 2012 was a very strange year climate-wise. The summer saw extended warmth, not so much heat waves, but a steady warmth. As summer passed into winter -- through autumn -- there was never a single moment when temperatures really snapped to lower temps quickly. This slow turn of the seasons could be to blame for the extended periods of time when you experience joint aches or back pain.

Pittsburgh Chiropractic practice, Grice Chiropractic has noticed the trend this winter of many patients stating that they have always had mild pain, but this year it is simply unbearable. This is likely due to the fact that the colder temperatures have slowly entered the US this year, leaving a painfully long term for the body to adjust to the cold. These pains we feel are indicators of wear, past breaks, or deficiencies in parts of the body. In-short, the pains are your body telling you that there is a problem right here, and the cold is flaring it up.

This initial signal is meant for the body to warn the brain to be careful of these areas in its daily activities. What patients should take from this, is that no matter what the weather looks like, those problems are existent, and need treatment. Scheduling an appointment with your chiropractor can help to investigate these pains and fully diagnose the problems.

A Holiday Gift For Your Health

Organic fruits and vegetables really are -- an opinion doctors have voiced -- much better for you than genetically modified or processed products. The levels of raw nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins in naturally grown organic produce trumps the levels found in chemically treated produce. Though the fruit of a "treated" plant may be much larger in size and have a much more pleasant appearance, this is mostly due to chemicals and antibiotics, and is no indicator of the health benefits and values of the plants fruit.

The best thing you can do for your body and health is to start eating more organic fruits and vegetables. But, with prices of organic fruits and vegetables being sometimes up to 10x the price of treated produce, it can be difficult -- financially -- to keep these products in your refrigerator and/or kitchen shelves. One great way to avoid the expenses of purchasing organics, is to simply grow them yourself.

Now, don't get nervous, growing organic vegetables and fruit trees is actually quite easy. Willis Orchards is an online purveyor of fruit trees, accessories, and a reference for keeping them alive and healthy. Willis Orchards makes owning and caring for orchard trees simple and effective. The trees themselves -- whether you decide on an apple, orange, or fig tree -- can be purchased as seeds, seedlings, or adolescent trees. The trees can then be shipped to any place in the United States, and planted in what space you have for plants.

To get a jump start on your health for 2013, visit Willis Orchards and start browsing through their selection of fruit-bearing trees. Jump on the organic bandwagon, and visit them online at:

Painkiller Sales Soar Across the Country

According to recent studies, the overall sales of prescription painkillers have increased shockingly from the year 2000 to 2010. The prescription drugs involved are all opiates.

The Associated Press analyses state that the highest increases were seen in Appalachia and in suburban communities. This is significant, as the epidemic abuse of prescription drugs originally saw their highest figures in urban areas, poor Appalachian communities, and near the Mexico and Canadian borders; now, new data shows that the trend is migrating outward from these epicenters at an alarming rate. Drug rehabs in California are seeing many more patients suffering from addiction to painkillers entering their 12 step treatment centers, than from heroin, cocaine, or any other illicit drugs.

In 2008, terminal overdoses from oxycodone and hydrocodone rose to a staggering 14,800 deaths. This, coupled with sales of the drug raking in more than a billion dollars per year, is evidence of the obvious epidemic.

While pharmacies are literally on every single corner, there simply aren't enough drug rehabs to counter the rampant availability of these drugs, so the war against them is a losing battle. Doctor-shopping is often the way that addicts get their drugs. Going from one doctor to the next, and one pharmacy to the next. This makes it easy for addicts, as if they are red-flagged as a possible abuser of the prescriptions, they simply move on to the next doctor or pharmacy.

If you or one of your loved ones is suffering from an addiction to prescription drugs, there is hope for them. Above It All Treatment is a drug rehab in California that knows how to treat those with severe addictions to prescription drugs. To learn more about how a 12 step addiction recovery program can help those abusing prescription drugs, visit us online at:

Americans Live Longer, Unhealthier Lives

The United States has a reputation around the world that is less than flattering. Many in other countries have a discriminate view of Americans; caricaturing them as fat, lazy, and unhealthy. While this may sting for an American to hear, new studies prove that as a whole, Americans are overweight, under-exercised, and very unhealthy.

This stigma is clearly supported in the recent reports, as many of the epidemic diseases Americans face are nearly completely avoidable. Diabetes, Obesity, and high blood pressure -- when not tied to an inherited trait -- can all be avoided altogether through healthy diet and exercise.

With an 18% drop in the rate of premature deaths in our country, the U.S. life expectancy grew to 78.5 years in 2009, the highest it has ever been. So why the epidemic of chronic and persistent -- avoidable -- diseases? The answer is: though our medical practices and treatments are saving lives and extending lifespans, Americans live unhealthy lifestyles throughout those long lives. These longer lives are filled with more and more treatments and diagnoses throughout individual's lives, however our medical practices are sufficient in keeping people alive and on treatments for extended periods of time.

The top two unhealthiest states were revealed today to be Mississippi and Louisiana. These states took the top spots due to their unreasonably high prevalence of  diabetes, obesity, and low birth weights; all diagnoses with definite links to poor diet and health choices.

The announcement that we as Americans are living longer than ever is a bittersweet announcement, as its bottom side states that American's health, in general, is on a shocking decline. Experts insist that the overwhelmingly bad bill of health for our country is undeniably attributed to poor health choices, and persist that these recent bad numbers are 100% reversible, if only we make the choice.

Military Cracking Down On Alcohol Abuse

In recent months, the top military brass have been adamant about putting into place restrictions against the abuse of alcohol by its soldiers at home and abroad. Stemming from the October accusations that two soldiers sexually assaulted a woman in Okinawa while intoxicated, The Department of Defense found that the rate of binge drinking and alcohol abuse amongst its soldiers was "epidemic," and called their findings "a public health crisis."

In an act to not only cut down on the rates of binge drinking, but also to support those soldiers with alcohol addictions and severe dependency problems, lobbyists are trying to reorganize the benefits offered by the military's health care system TRICARE. Currently, TRICARE does not offer sufficient benefits for those needing to enter chemical dependency treatment programs, or require anti-addiction drugs such as Suboxone.

New Dawn Recovery Center is a drug treatment and eating disorder center in California; New dawn has seen a large influx of returning vets and active military seeking treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. As a dual diagnosis residential treatment center, New Dawn is used to dealing with dual diagnoses. Many of the returning vets that enter treatment also have underlying conditions, such as post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), that strengthen the addiction and make it more severe.

The biggest concern to military leaders is the trend of binge drinking among its active military. Binge Drinking entails consuming extremely large amounts of alcohol over a short period of time in order to sate the need for alcohol before extended periods of time when the soldier is not allowed to drink. Statistics collected state that 47% of active military personnel admit to participating in this binge drinking ritual regularly; a statistic that shows a huge negative threat to the health of U.S. troops.

The Department of Defense states that its policy is: [to] "prevent and eliminate drug and alcohol abuse and dependence from the Department of Defense." Still, the hangups with coverage for treatment through TRICARE is more or less at a standstill at the moment, and many of the soldiers most in need of treatment do not have the option of seeking it.

Until reform can be made through TRICARE and at the department of defense, policies have been put in place to try and curb the out-of-control drinking by soldiers, yet putting a policy in-place to treat these individuals is held back by red tape. In the meantime, New Dawn Recovery is still accepting and treating patients from a military background, and has openings in its New Dawn Recovery programs for any and all of the Armed Forces personnel.

Childrens' Martial Arts Builds Stronger Adults

We all have heard of the benefits that have been touted, insisting that karate and martial arts classes instills values and lessons in those participating that are unmatched in other outlets. Many martial arts movies show this in scenes of the young apprentice learning life lessons from the old master. In this case, Hollywood didn't have to stretch the truth.

Karate classes not only teach essential self defense techniques that build and tone muscle, but also it also teaches mental patience, calming techniques, and control. Elite Defense Systems  -- located in Rockford, Illinois -- knows very well the value of the teachings of their various art-forms. Elite's Rockford Krav Maga classes, kickboxing, and MMA training draw pupils of every age, but it is the children who tend to absorb the most benefits from these holistic programs.

The younger entrants attain regular exercise, strength building, and muscle control skills through Elite's Rockford martial arts classes, and the positive effects of this program can be seen at home and in school as well; with the better focus and concentration that can be developed through martial arts, many students begin to excel in other aspects of their life as well.

To learn more about the benefits children enrolled in martial arts classes can expect to see, visit freeself-defense.com, or view their Rockford martial arts location HERE.

What to Expect from Outpatient Drug Rehab

Of all of the many different drug treatment program options available today, some may choose the outpatient drug rehab option. There are a few reasons why one would choose outpatient care as opposed to inpatient care, one of them being work commitments. Often in cases when work is keeping an individual from seeking the best drug rehab that suits their needs, the only option is to attend an outpatient program. In these cases, it is good that the individual is seeking treatment in some form or another, but they must realize that outpatient programs require all lot more willpower and hard work for the treatment to be successful.

When choosing an outpatient drug treatment course, one should find out what exact strategy they use during the treatment. Treatment types could be for a specific drug only, such as heroin rehab, or it could be that the main focus is as a holistic drug rehab; the strategy of the program can have a major effect on the success of your tenure in it.

There are a great number of outpatient facilities and programs around, you simply have to do your research and make sure that the program you decide upon fits all of your own specific needs. If you find a program that you are comfortable in and are comfortable with their strategy, you will likely have a successful treatment.

More Treatment Centers Relying on 12 Steps

The 12 step addiction recovery process seems to be getting utilized by more and more addiction treatment centers these days. One of the biggest factors causing this shift from newer processes to the traditional is that recovering addicts that have been treated using the 12 step method tend to have better long term recovery results.

While newer treatment options -- such as holistic and natural treatments -- still show promise, no newer programs seem to show the type of long term healthy lifestyles that patients have shown under 12 steps.

Patients that have taken part in 12 step recovery programs often leave treatment with a renewed outlook on life. This positive view helps to propel them forward in their sobriety without the harsh yearnings for drugs and/or alcohol that many other recovering addicts often battle with. The 12 steps themselves act as stepping stones when an individual encounters a torrent of temptation. By keeping the philosophy of the 12 steps close to them, many recovering addicts are able to live out the rest of their lives without any incidents of extreme temptation or relapse.

Above It All Treatment offers numerous 12 step addiction recovery programs in California and currently has openings for new clients. Visit them online at:

Drug Rehab Experts, Finding the Correct Program For You

There are literally thousands of drug rehabs and drug counseling programs out there in the United States today. Each one of them has their own specifics as to what they treat, what type of addict they treat, and how exactly those individuals are treated.

With so many options, it can be difficult to know which program is right for you. Add to this that making the choice to get sober is a difficult time for a person, it is quite easy to get overwhelmed by the vast amount of information and options presented.

It is for this reason that many medical professionals and counselors offer up their help in sorting through the different options and bring a sense of direction to individuals seeking treatment and healing.

Many factors are to be considered when weighing treatment options.  First off, what types of substances are at the root of the addiction? For a person addicted to heroin, a heroin rehab might seem like the only choice. However, detox procedures need to be considered and finding a rehab program that combines inpatient treatment with medical detox procedures is key. In that same vein of thinking, a detox program that does not offer further drug counseling programs will not fully tackle the addiction, and can be problematic and even dangerous to the patient.

Outpatient and holistic drug rehabs also exist, and may be suitable for some people, but may not be the right choice for those with sever chemical dependencies, especially when detoxing from alcohol, heroin, or other drugs that carry with them severe or deadly withdrawal symptoms.

There are so many variables to drug rehab programs, and this article barely scratches the surface of those variables. For the health and the safety of the patients and those around them, it is of the utmost importance to speak with an addiction specialist or treatment counselor and discuss all of the open options. If this step is taken, the possibility of a fully successful and lifelong cessation from drugs and/or alcohol becomes a higher possibility.

Rx Drugs, Grapefruit Causes Deadly Side Effects

For the most part, fruits and vegetables can be one of the healthiest things you put into your body. Grapefruit, however, are gaining recent headlines as a potential killer.

Scientists have known for many years that a specific chemical in grapefruit (called furanocoumarins) can dissolve natural enzymes in the stomach which reduce the potency of prescription medicines. Drugs are usually made more potent to begin with, in order to contend with this enzyme. This extra potency can lead to severe side effects and even death.

Researchers have listed 85 prescription drugs that they have proven interact with chemicals in grapefruit. These drugs are prescribed for anything ranging from anxiety to HIV Treatments. 43 of the 85 drugs noted caused serious side effects, up to and including death, and more drugs are being added to that list by the day

"The problem with these grapefruit combinations is that people don't realize how dangerous even one bite of grapefruit could be; even if that bite is taken hours before or after taking [Rx] drugs." says Doctor Heinrich Welson, a general physician from Verde Valley, AZ. "People simply aren't aware that it could cause side effects, and they certainly aren't checking with the pharmacist to see what fruits they can eat on medications."

What it comes down to is that the word needs to get out. People must realize that if they are taking medications, grapefruit is something that they should check with a doctor before consuming.

Nursing Assistants: Low Wages for These Angels?

Nursing Assistants may work in a retirement home, a cancer treatment center, or even in a patient's home. These angels do all the dirty work; cleaning up patients after they go to the bathroom, bathing patients, and feeding patients. On top of all of this, Nursing Assistants also must endure so very tough workdays mentally as well, as many of their patients are terminally ill, severely diseased, or mentally impaired. Sometimes these medical professionals even work until their patients have passed away, and afterwards. Yet still, these professionals are paid much less than any other medical professionals.

Truly an atrocity, the pay scales for this type of work is very skewed, as many of the service centers hiring these professionals try to cut costs anywhere they can. The main cost incurred by nursing centers, is the wages of nurses and assistants. One justification some nursing centers use to answer for the nursing staff's low pay, is that nursing assistants are not required to have as much medical education as say a medical assistant. While this is true, nursing assistants must have a caring heart and a strong will to be able to do this job.

Just as teachers often say that you have to love the job, because the pay isn't much, nursing assistants do the job because they truly do care about their patients, and the love what they do. We owe all of these angels a debt of gratitude.

How 12 Step Programs Breed Continued Success

There are a number of different types of programs used to treat chemical dependency and addiction, each of them utilizing their own form of guidelines. Christian rehab programs often use the bible's laws of morality and the teachings of Jesus Christ as the groundwork for their treatment, while homeopathic and naturopathic programs use spirituality and and the laws of nature to guide patients along in their journeys. 12 step recovery programs use the twelve steps themselves to work as a rigid structure in which patients can navigate their way to sobriety. The twelve steps are as follows:

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
The 12 step method has been touted and heralded for its success for many years now, and many believe that the rigid guideline -- and not the steps themselves -- is the reason. during the path to sobriety, the individual needs structure; not only to keep the mind occupied, but also to draw a clear path to success so that that person can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Above It All Treatment Center in California is a huge proponent of the 12 step program, but also employs other treatment types in its arsenal of programs. Above It All understands that patients battling addiction often feel that they are at a dead end, or "have hit rock bottom." When a patient reaches this point, it is essential to illustrate a way out that not only gives them the initial push towards success, but also escorts them all the way through to sobriety.

Post Graduate Work for Medical Professionals

As the construction and housing industries have been in a steady decline from the years of 2008 - 2012, the medical industry saw a boom. More students enrolled in and graduated from medical programs in recent years than any other time in history.

In the past 4 years, many of the graduates from these programs sought jobs in metropolitan areas such as Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, and Seattle. Jobs were plentiful, and medical institutions were eager to hire a great number of professionals.

That tide is beginning to turn now, with hospitals and practices having more than enough workers to fill the growing need for medical service. In fact, Phoenix especially is now seeing a surplus of medical professionals searching for jobs. This causes confusion for many recent graduates wondering what they are going to do next. Should they go back to school within a different industry, or keep searching for work?

While the metropolitan areas definitely did over-hire recently, the majority of those hires moved from more rural areas into the bigger cities. This influx of work left medical institutions outside of the city with a lack of qualified workers. Using Phoenix again as an example; medical assistants, doctors, surgeons, radiologists, and nuclear-medicine experts were all lured away from equally big medical destinations such as the Verde Valley, Flagstaff, Tucson, Bullhead City, and other smaller cities by the allure of the giant conglomerate medical providers moving into Phoenix. Now, those same smaller markets are needing a restaffing of medical professionals more than the larger cities.

With that being said, if you are a recent graduate, or a veteran in the medical field that is looking for a job, the smaller markets are the direction in-which you should be aiming.

Bay Area Drug Rehab and Dual Diagnosis

In the addiction treatment industry, more and more rehab institutions are beginning to offer dual diagnosis residential treatment programs. This is likely because, as addiction itself is becoming studied deeper, we are beginning to understand that the majority of chemical dependencies are a part of a much larger condition involving multiple issues; these issues could range from depression to post-traumatic stress, and work in-tandem with the addiction to worsen the problem.

New Dawn Recovery Center has four locations within the Bay Area of San Francisco and understands the relationship between chemical dependency and the underlying conditions that provoke or worsen addiction. It is their stance, that in order to wholly treat addictions successfully, all aspects of that addiction, and the factors that provoke it, need to be addressed and attended to.

Cosmetic Surgery and Confidence

There is a solid link between cosmetic surgery and confidence through self-image. The fact is that cosmetic surgery can alleviate qualms that patients have with their body image. Once these qualms have been erased, a good majority of patients make conscious changes to their health and lifestyle in order to preserve their newly found self confidence.

Rocklin Cosmetic Surgery performs thousands of breast augmentations, laser liposuctions, and cellulite treatments in Sacramento California, and they wholeheartedly concur with this notion. The change in self-perception is evident when patients come in for their first post-operative checkups; in the short time since the procedure, many patients have adopted a healthier attitude along with a healthier dietary and exercise regimen due to the initial results of the procedures.

Rocklin Cosmetic Surgery stresses the fact that liposuction treatments, though often stigmatized as a "lazy" alternative to exercise, is often the one factor that stimulates healthy change in its patients. Rocklin is an avid believer that cosmetic surgery is very beneficial to its patients mental well-being and that it is a safe and healthy option for qualified patients.

Dr. Efrain Gonzalez is the founder and medical director of Advanced Medical Spa (Rocklin Cosmetic Surgery), and Rocklin services the following cities and areas:

Rocklin, Granite Bay, Roseville, Sacramento, Antelope, Auburn, Citrus Heights, Orangevale, Folsom, Lincoln, North Heighlands, Elk Grove, Davis, Yuba City, Woodland, New Castle, Eldorado Hills, Rancho Cordova, Rio Linda, California.

Cleanliness and Safety in Health Environments

The recent headlines about the fungal meningitis outbreak have been frightening, to say the least. The fact that so many could have been infected with this disease -- a disease that has proved to be deadly in dozens of cases -- is mind-blowing.

It didn't take long to find the connection between all of the patients who had contracted this disease -- they had all received steroid shots for pain within the past six months. Just as quickly as the connection was made, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced that the cases were all directly related to tainted drugs.

The public was shocked to find out that their own physicians were unknowingly injecting spores of a deadly fungal disease into various parts of their bodies, (The drugs were used to treat a variety of ailments and depending on the reason for the treatment, the drugs would be injected into the area of the body corresponding to that particular treatment). But the public would get one more shock to their senses when an announcement was made regarding the sanitary conditions of the laboratory that was manufacturing the drugs.

While investigations at the lab (which we will not mention by name in this article) are still ongoing, investigators shocked everyone with the fact that they had found a greyish-black mold of unknown classification growing rampantly in multiple areas of the lab. With the intensity of the growth, investigators were all in agreement that there had to have been years of poor sanitation practices going on to have led to the types of conditions they were seeing.

The fact that "years of poor sanitation practices" could occur in a supposedly "sterile" environment is appalling. The most frightening part about this occurrence is that the "years of poor sanitation" took place while the lab was consistently inspected per the terms of the FDA. Why did inspectors not catch this? Why did it take the sudden and unnecessary deaths of dozens to finally see that there was a problem?

What we are left with, while investigators finish up their collection-and reviewing of the evidence, is an unnerving sense of hesitancy towards the many chemicals, drugs, and even foods that we put into our bodies. Products that have been quality checked and inspected by the same offices and regulators that "checked" the sanitary conditions of the laboratory that produced the tainted drugs linked to the meningitis outbreak.

We must take this sad occurrence and keep it as a reminder that the agencies that inspect and regulate our food and drugs aren't infallible, and contamination can occur in any product; even the products that we believe are 100% safe.

The Future of CT Scanners

Aquilion One dynamic volume computed tomography, or (AOVCT), is a new form of "CAT" scan  (CT Scan) that has been developed and is now being tested in some of the most high-tech institutes and medical centers around the country. This new technology is a huge leap forward for medical diagnoses and treatment, as it sees the movement and the functions of the body in real-time.

These new advances in nuclear medicine services are opening doors and gaining insights as to how the body functions in an average, healthy person; and how it performs in those afflicted by various ailments and diseases.

The power to watch the body in-actions, lets medical professionals promote healthy functions and inhibit unhealthy functions (Such as deficient -- or runaway -- immune-response).

The diagnosis abilities of this new CT scanning device alone, are enough to boost science and medicine progressing into the future.Seeing a malignant tumor in 3D in real-time is now a reality. Seeing how the blood-vessels jet through the arteries and veins is easy, and allows doctors to see exactly where blood cells are getting held-up throughout the entire circulatory system's course. This can greatly reduce the risk of death from cardiac diseases.

Apart from Nuclear Cardiology, this same technology can ban easily used in Oncology as well. Imagine, watching your own child moving in the womb, in amazing detail.

The possibilities are only limited by the minds of the millions working in the medical industry right now. Follow Southwestern Imaging to keep up-to-date on this new technology.
